The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has extended the industry comment period on its October 11, 2002 notice (Docket No. NHTSA-02-13546) on event data recorders until February 28.

The agency said it was doing so to accommodate a request from the National Assn. of EMS Physicians to include comments solicited from their members during a January conference.

The ATA and the Distribution & LTL Carriers Assn. have reported jointly filing comments opposing mandated recorders. The groups said their primary position is to “support the voluntary use of technology and devices to enhance safety and productivity.”

Comments can be sent electronically to http://dms.dot.gov or mailed to Docket Management, Room PL-401, 400 Seventh St., S.W., Washington DC 20590.
