The truckload and intermodal operations of Schneider National Inc. has announced that it will move to an untethered trailer tracking system currently under development by Qualcomm Inc. As part of the transition, the carrier has agreed to lead a consortium of fleet users to provide performance feedback and development suggestions on the new asset management system.

Based on Qualcomm's tethered TrailerTRACS product, the system will provide on-demand location and status information for parked trailers unhooked from tractors or moving on railcars. The same system will also be included in a demonstration project recently funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (see p. 67).

Schneider National has used Qualcomm's OmniTRACS wireless data service for the past 15 years.
