Fuel tax for information superhighway: The Internal Revenue Service has created a web page with information and links relating to fuel taxes at http://www.irs.gov/bus_info/excise/index.html. For instance, one link allows carriers to print fill-in versions of the returns for the heavy vehicle use tax (Form 2290) and a variety of other excise taxes (Form 720). There is also a description of the excise tax online exchange (ExTOLE), intended to improve information-sharing among federal and state tax and highway agencies. The IRS says ExTOLE data will include:

  • State contact information for disclosure, legislative, revenue, taxation and law enforcement related to fuel tax administration;

  • Vehicle licensing information;

  • Sightings of vehicles transporting fuel in interstate commerce.
