PeopleNet Communications Corp. has introduced a wireless communications system for metropolitan area delivery fleets in Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Other markets in the Midwest and Texas will be added over the next three months, according to the company.

Similar to the company's over-the-road service, PeopleNet Metro offers two-way messaging, data communications and GPS-based vehicle tracking over the analog cellular telephone network and the Internet. The major difference is far more frequent vehicle updates — as frequent as every 30 min. for the metro service compared to once or twice a day for OTR applications.

The new metro service also takes advantage of PeopleNet's Palm OS handheld hardware. The handheld device, introduced late last year, adds signature and bar code capture to the company's other services. A dash-mounted in-cab message display terminal is available.
