SmartWay recognizes 27 for green efforts

Eighteen carriers, five shippers, three logistics providers and an industry service group have been recognized for their environmental efforts with 2008 SmartWay Excellence Awards

Eighteen carriers, five shippers, three logistics providers and an industry service group have been recognized for their environmental efforts with 2008 SmartWay Excellence Awards.

The awards are given annually for “superior efforts to reduce fuel use and lower carbon emissions from freight transport” by the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Partnership. EPA established the SmartWay program in 2004 to help fleets and shippers evaluate ways to reduce emissions and to help find funding for new green transportation technology.

The 2008 carriers named as winners were:

  • Challenger Motor Freight
  • Con-way Freight
  • Covenant Transport
  • Dillon Transport
  • Gordon Trucking
  • J.B. Hunt Transport Services
  • NFI
  • Pacific Harbor Line
  • Quad/Graphics
  • Roehl Transport
  • Schneider National
  • Stan Koch & Sons Trucking
  • Swift Transportation
  • Trailer Bridge
  • UPS
  • Watkins Shepard Trucking.

Shipper award winners were:

  • HP
  • Kohl’s Department Stores
  • Kimberly-Clark
  • Lowes Companies
  • Sharp Electronics

APL Logistics, Hub Group and Transplace were the logistics companies given 2008 SmartWay Excellence Awards, as was Cascade Sierra Solutions, a service organization that helps fleets find funding for idling solutions and other emissions-cutting technology.
