To further its efforts to compete with truckload carriers for freight, the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. (BNSF) has launched a new e-commerce system designed to enable customers to get real-time tracking and tracing data about their shipments.

BNSF said the system, called Customer Logistics System (CLS), gives customers complete access to all relevant information about each of their shipments while it moves on the BNSF network. Customers use CLS to pick what information is important to them and build customized reports with their specific track and trace information.

Customers can also store their report templates on the secured CLS application so that they can be managed, modified or deleted as needed any time, day or night.

“We learned that 85% of our calls to customer service were for track and trace information,” said Kathleen Regan, BNSF’s vp of eBusiness Development. “With CLS, customers have the power to independently gather information about their shipments without our assistance and customize reports to their needs.”

To use CLS, customers must go to the MyBNSF site and register for the CLS tool. Then a BNSF representative will follow up with the customer for a quick tutorial and training.
