LTL carrier Overnite Transportation Co. is reporting that security measures being implemented for the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Boston next week are going to cause unavoidable freight pickup and delivery delays.

The greatest impact will be felt along I-93, which, because of its proximity to Boston’s FleetCenter convention hall facility, will be closed entirely in the afternoon and evening hours during the DNC, but virtually all inlets and outlets for the city are expected to have major traffic delays, said Overnite COO & senior vp-operations Gordon Mackenzie.

In addition, law enforcement officials have announced commercial vehicles will be randomly searched, further delaying commercial traffic, with hazardous-material shipments especially susceptible to inspection delays. Many trucks with hazmat cargoes may be turned away entirely from certain areas, said Mackenzie.

“The best time for deliveries will be in the morning -- as early as possible. Deliveries to the area near the convention center will be restricted and these areas can only be accessed through a checkpoint where lengthy delays are expected,” he said.
