Almost 700 diesel-powered buses will be cruising New York City's streets more cleanly thanks in part to emission control technology from Engelhard Corp. The company said the buses, including 190 new and 500 existing vehicles, will emit almost no black smoke.
Engelhard's DPX catalytic particulate filters are combined with advanced electronic engine controls on the buses to eliminate more than 90% of particulate matter when used with the low-sulfur fuel. The system also significantly reduces hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, according to the company.
"This program is an important part of our commitment to provide our customers with safe, clean, affordable bus service," said Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City president Lawrence G. Reuter. "It is our intent to make ours the cleanest big city fleet on earth."
