Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker plans to beef up security for driver's licenses in his state - especially for commercial vehicle operators.

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation (PennDOT) has been authorized to begin enacting several new security provisions for vehicle operator licenses, including assurance that expiration dates for non-U.S. citizen driver's licenses will expire on the same day as their immigration visas and closer scrutiny of immigration documents of non-U.S. citizens to guarantee validity.

For truck drivers, PennDOT plans to enact requirements of the U.S. Patriot Act by conducting criminal history checks and fingerprinting all truck drivers who are issued a hazardous-materials endorsement on their commercial driver's license. The agency also plans to implement more random checks of hazmat truckers.
