Qualcomm Inc. today introduced a portable computing solution capable of transmitting electronic signatures via satellite communications.

Qualcomm said the new technology allows a reduction in paperwork and minimizes delays in processing daily operations data, resulting in improved load and pre-dispatch planning.

"Fleets will be able to transmit secure electronic signatures over a satellite in 60-100 byte message size," said Glynn Spangenberg, vp and gm of transportation logistics for Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions.

Spangenberg said the product provides the opportunity for automated proof of delivery and improved billing cycle times, load planning and customer service, while generating additional stops per day.

The portable computing system is a result of the combined effort of Qualcomm and wireless solution provider Agentek. Information is transferred securely via Qualcomm's satellite-based mobile communications system.

Messages are sent via satellite through Qualcomm's NetworkManagement Center to dispatch centers throughout the United States.
