Third-party logistics provider Ryder System Inc., has sealed a deal with telecom giant Lucent Technologies to manage its outbound logistics network in North America. Lucent will use Ryder’s logistics operations to merge and consolidate factory- and third-party-provided materials into single, pre-scheduled deliveries to its customers.

According to the terms of the contract, Ryder will help Lucent improve delivery times to customers, while giving the company the ability to track orders from pre-shipment through final delivery. Initial projections indicate the arrangement will enable Lucent to cover more than 90% of its U.S. delivery demand within 24 hours and 100% within two days, said Ryder.

The deal with Ryder is part of a wider strategy at Lucent to combine all supply chain, manufacturing, logistics and distribution under its newly formed Supply Chain Networks (SCN) organization. “Moving products from design to manufacturing and on to customers, rapidly and profitably, is no small task,” said Jose Mejia, Lucent’s vice president and chief supply chain officer. “With the signing of this new agreement, Ryder and Lucent are committed to bringing innovative solutions to market as quickly as possible.”
