With the terror alert upgraded one notch to "Code Orange," or "High," truck traffic around the nation will be negatively affected in coming days.

Most states have already begun opening all weigh stations for 24-hour a day mandatory truck inspections. Several tank truck carriers have reported they have been notified by the Department of Homeland Security or their state police requesting that their drivers be extra vigilant and to make sure they carry all of their identification, licenses and paperwork.

In California, for example, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered checkpoints on Highway 101 to divert and inspect large trucks and trailers before entering San Francisco. The checkpoints were set up at the Spencer Avenue off-ramp north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and at the Sierra Point Parkway exit just north of Candlestick Park. All trucks carrying hazmat will be checked, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

All cargo containers at California ports will be subjected to increased security, too.

On the East Coast, truck inspections were increased on the Hudson River crossings connecting New York and New Jersey. State police have been seen staking out bridges and overpasses along interstate 95 in the Northeast.

In Connecticut, Gov. John Rowland ordered state police on commuter trains; aircraft and helicopters took to the air to patrol highways, bridges and facilities such as power plants. Cargo airplanes are expected to undergo increased scrutiny because terrorists could use aircraft as a weapon as they did against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, a Department of Homeland Security official said.
