The national average price for a gallon of diesel last week raised the bar over the record high prices set on week-ended Aug. 15 after a 2.1-cent increase to $2.588, the Energy Information Administration reported.

California, the region that was in most desperate need for relief at the pumps, was the only region that was spared a price hike, actually dropping 0.5-cent to $3.037. The half-cent rollback, however, certainly wasn’t enough for California to dethrone itself as the most expensive region to purchase diesel. The Rocky Mountain region saw the biggest jump, up 6.4 cents to $2.679. The Gulf Coast was the cheapest region in which to fill up, despite a 3.1-cent hike to $2.512.
