Spot rates are experiencing seasonal bumps and dips, with dry van and refrigerated rates rising and flatbed rates dipping slightly. This is typical market activity leading up to the July 4 holiday, according to weekly reports from FTR Transportation Intelligence and DAT Freight & Analytics. 

Despite these seasonal changes, FTR emphasized that the overall market is strong; broker-posted rates are almost 50% higher than this time last year.

Here is how rates and volumes changed across the three major spot market equipment types:

Dry van rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose 5.3 cents last week. Year over year, rates are up 52%. Dry van loads rose 10.5%.

According to DAT: National linehaul spot rates rose 5 cents last week, averaging $2.43 per mile.

Refrigerated rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose 8.3 cents last week. Rates were almost 41% higher than last year. Refrigerated loads increased almost 17%.

According to DAT: National linehaul spot rates rose 6 cents last week, averaging $2.74 per mile. 

Flatbed rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates dropped just under 1 cent last week. Year over year, rates were up almost 52%. Flatbed loads fell 0.7%. 

According to DAT: National linehaul spot rates rose 2 cents last week, averaging $2.96 per mile.
