Construction to jam Virginia and Maryland highways

The outer loop of the Capital Beltway (I-495 East) just past the I-95 South exit will be closed due to construction from 8 pm Saturday, April 2 until 10 am Sunday, April 3.

Capital Beltway eastbound motorists heading towards the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or heading to I-395 northbound will be detoured onto I-95 South and exit at Exit 166A (Fairfax County Parkway/ Newington/Ft. Belvoir) to head back to I-95 North, I-395 North and I-495 East. The 10-mile detour could add about 30 minutes to motorists’ trips, the Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT) said.

In addition, I-395 southbound motorists heading to I-495 East/I-95 North/Woodrow Wilson Bridge will experience delays of up to 20 minutes while all lanes periodically shut down.

I-495 East motorists entering the night work zone area will move from four lanes down to two right lanes on the Beltway in the Braddock Road exit area all the way to the I-95 South exit.

During the closure, Virginia State Police and VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol will be stationed along the detour route.

Separately, the Maryland Dept. of Transportation’s State Highway Administration will shut down eastbound ramp I-70 to northbound I-81 in Washington County starting tentatively on March 29 through May 29.

Motorists will be detoured to continue east along I-70 to exit 29 MD 632 (Downsville Pike), back onto I-70 westbound, and then back to I-81 northbound.
