Choptank Transport is leading the efforts in a new veterans initiative announced recently by the Transportation Intermediaries Association. TIA has more than 65 companies enrolled in the program in more than 30 states, all of which have promised to actively attract and hire returning US soldiers. Geoff Turner, Choptank’s president/chief executive officer, is the TIA’s acting chairman and is a strong advocate of the program. Turner said the goal is to hire 100 veterans by the end of 2014. In a recent meeting, he put the challenge out to all members of the organization to reach out in their communities and do their part.
“With more than 13,000 TIA members in nearly every state, we have the ability to effect a positive change in people’s lives on a massive scale,” said Turner. “Our soldier’s efforts in Tikrit and Baghdad, Kandahar, and Kabul will long be remembered. Today I challenge us all to not forget them upon their return.” Choptank has already hired its first veteran for the program. Claude Whittaker, a Delmarva MD native who served with honor and distinction in the US Marine Corps, joined the company in early September. A third-party logistics company (3PL), Choptank specializes in transportation management services that include truckload, refrigerated and frozen, LTL, van, flatbed, intermodal, and warehousing. Headquartered in Preston MD, the firm has offices in Nashville TN, Atlanta GA, Tampa FL, and Denver CO with several new locations opening soon.
