SAE reveals Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award winners

May 21, 2020
Winners are recognized for innovation, originality and positive impact on the environment. The North American Council for Freight Efficiency was one of four teams to win an Environmental Excellence Transportation Award.

SAE International (SAE) revealed the winners of its Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award, showcasing the work of individuals and teams who have made significant innovations in reducing the environmental impact caused by the transportation industry.

The four categories of the award include Public Awareness, Mobile Energy and Emissions, New Methods and Tools, and Materials Development and Usage.

“Transportation plays a crucial role for our communities to thrive, yet it has also become one of the largest pollutants,” said Jack Pokrzywa, director of global ground vehicle standards at SAE. “In an effort to protect the health of our environment, the Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award recognizes those in the industry who continuously invent solutions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. As mobility evolves, it is critical for the transportation industry to develop new technologies to meet the growing demand to reduce our carbon footprint.”

According to SAE, "awardees demonstrated innovative achievement, favorable environmental impact, widespread applicability and no transfer of environmental burdens."

The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) was one of four teams to win an Environmental Excellence Transportation Award. NACFE's award was in the “Education, Training and Public Awareness” category: “10.1 Mile per Gallon Run on Less Class 8 Truck Efficiency Demonstration.” NACFE award recipients were:

  • James Brown, video producer and director, James Brown Media
  • Jessie Lund, senior associate, Rocky Mountain Institute
  • Yunsu Park, director of engineering, NACFE
  • Michael Roeth, executive director, NACFE
  • Denise Rondini, communications director, NACFE
  • David Schaller, industry engagement director, NACFE

"We are both thrilled and humbled to have been given this award. We like to think we are doing good in the industry and making a difference, so it is nice when our efforts are acknowledged.," NACFE said in its May newsletter. "As you can see, it took a team effort to produce Run on Less, and that aligns with NACFE’s model of cooperation, collaboration and partnerships — not only with our team members but with the industry in general."
