Magellan adds new product, updates RoadMate GPS

Oct. 6, 2014

SAN DIEGO. Today at the 2014 ATA Management Conference Exhibition, Magellan announced a new device as well as an update to its RoadMate 5190T-LM commercial truck GPS unit.

Magellan has announced a new Android-based GPS navigation device in the RoadMate RC9496T-LMB. Also available is the new Magellan Fleet Manager desktop tool. Both will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Magellan RoadMate RC9496T-LMB is a 7 in. Android GPS truck navigation device with an HD multi-touch capacitive glass display. It is fleet ready with a serial port, dash mount, and black-box cable. The supplemental Magellan Fleet Manager is a desktop tool that enables central office management of bulk software and map updates, route planning, and SmartGPS Eco cloud content.

The Magellan Android Fleet application, included with the RoadMate RC9496T-LMB and available separately for use on fleet-ready Android devices, provides advanced fleet navigation and protocol support. This includes hours of service/log book at the device and server level (HOS), and Automatic On-Board Recording Device (AOBRD) capabilities. In addition, time and money saving content sourced from the Magellan SmartGPS Eco cloud provides truckers and fleet managers with real-time, local information on fuel pricing, weather (including five-day forecast and overlays), and IP traffic.

“Magellan is focused on making the lives of fleet drivers, owners, and office personnel as safe, accurate, and efficient as possible,” said Thomas Rasulo, Magellan director of business development for fleet sales. “Our new Android Fleet navigation device and application are designed to do just that. They offer comprehensive fleet and truck navigation solutions by offering the most extensive GPS features available as well as open protocols for easy integration, and real-time content delivered by our SmartGPS Eco cloud.”

The Magellan Android Fleet application offers users a host of truck navigation features, including:

  • Customizable truck route sets up vehicle profile and calculates routes based on height, weight, width, length, and hazmat restrictions; it guides users according to their route preferences and vehicle profile.
  • Multiple-stop routing lets drivers plan their trip with multiple stops in the order they want or automatically optimizes for the most efficient route, helping to save time and money.
  • Free lifetime traffic alerts, sent directly to their GPS unit, lets users plan more precise travel times and ETAs by avoiding traffic jams and other delays.
  • Junction view displays a realistic image of the road and highway signs to help guide drivers to the correct lane that the vehicle needs to be in for safe merging and exiting.
  • Landmark guidance gives users an easier way to navigate to their destinations by telling them to turn at familiar landmarks, such as gas stations, stores or other large, easily-seen places instead of only street names that may be hard to locate and/or read.
  • Highway lane assist helps when navigating complex highway interchanges, ensuring that a driver stays on the correct roadway.

The company also announced an update to its 5190T-LM, which now features comprehensive protocol support (including HOS and IFTA), best-in-class truck navigation software, and the Windows Embedded Compact (WinCE) operating system, the company said. The RoadMate Commercial 5190T-LM also comes with a large 5 in. high-definition touchscreen display; multiple destination, truck-specific routing technology; free lifetime map updates and real-time traffic alerts; Bluetooth hands-free calling capability; and an extra-loud 93dB speaker.

“With its extensive list of protocol support, having the RoadMate Commercial 5190T-LM in the cab is like having a personal assistant along for the ride,” said Tom Rasulo, Magellan’s director of business development for fleet sales. “Likewise, its mobile data terminal capability enhances the two-way dispatch-driver information delivery with seamless connectivity to in-vehicle telematics transponder devices.”

Among the fleet protocols supported are:

  • Driving status reporting of hours of service (HOS) for multiple-driver logins logs hours of service and driving status, tracks hours, and records state mileage for IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) fuel logging; all logs may be exported for reporting and tracking
  • Automatic on board recording (AOBRD) to assist with HOS and IFTA tracking
  • Vehicle profile protocols that allow the office to import/export height, width, length, weight, and type of vehicle for custom and safe routing
  • Text message protocols for sending and receiving messages between driver and office
  • Destination protocols to receive and display new stops sent from the office
  • Estimated time of arrival (ETA) protocols
  • Multi-destination protocols that allow the office to send up to 12 destinations to the driver
  • Status protocols that show up-to-the-minute vehicle location, including current GPS position, TTG (time to go) to next destination, and more
  • Auto arrival protocol that automatically detects when driver has arrived at a stop

The 5190 also includes customizable truck routing, multi-stop routing, free lifetime map updates and traffic alerts and an information dashboard that supplies information such as direction, elevation, and truck speed limits. The Truck Speed Limit Warning turns red if vehicle is traveling at a higher rate than the posted truck speed limit.
