Magellan takes wraps off new navigation device, management system

Magellan is introducing a new GPS navigation device along with a desktop management tool this week at the Connected Fleets USA 2014 show in Atlanta.

The RoadMate RC9496T-LMB is a 7-in. Android GPS fleet navigation device. It is fleet ready with a serial port, dash mount, and black-box cable. There is also an HD multi-touch capacitive glass display.

The supplemental Magellan Fleet Manager desktop tool enables central office management of bulk software and map updates, route planning and SmartGPS Eco cloud content.

The Magellan Android Fleet application provides advanced fleet navigation and protocol support, including hours of service/log book at the device and server level (HOS), and automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD) capabilities. The application is included with the RoadMate RC9496T-LMB as well as available separately for use on fleet-ready Android devices.

Content can be obtained from the Magellan SmartGPS Eco cloud to provide truckers and fleet managers with real-time local information on fuel pricing, weather (including five-day forecast and overlays), and IP traffic.

“Magellan is excited to showcase our new RoadMate RC9496T-LMB and Android Fleet application to attendees of Connected Fleets USA,” said Thomas Rasulo, Magellan director of business development for fleet sales. “Taken together or used individually, they are perfect for any fleet operation, as they provide users with superior flexible configurations. Adding the Magellan Fleet Manager to both provides a complete fleet navigation solution.”

Through the Magellan Android Fleet application, the RoadMate RC9496T-LMB offers the following features:

  • Customizable truck route sets up vehicle profile and calculates routes based on height, weight, width, length, and hazmat restrictions; it guides users according to their route preferences and vehicle profile.
  • Multiple-stop routing lets drivers plan their trip with multiple stops in the order they want or automatically optimizes for the most efficient route, helping to save time and money.
  • Free lifetime traffic alerts, sent directly to the GPS unit, lets users plan more precise travel times and ETAs by avoiding traffic jams and other delays.
  • Junction view displays a realistic image of the road and highway signs to help guide drivers to the correct lane that the vehicle needs to be in for safe merging and exiting.
  • Landmark guidance gives users an easier way to navigate to their destinations by telling them to turn at familiar landmarks, such as gas stations, stores or other large, easily-seen places instead of only street names that may be hard to locate and/or read.
  • Highway lane assist helps when navigating complex highway interchanges, ensuring that a driver stays on the correct roadway.
  • Exit POIs indicate where truck stops, food, lodging, rest areas, and weigh stations are located at an approaching exit.
  • Integrated Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology allows drivers to safely talk hands free on compatible Bluetooth phones.

The Magellan Android Fleet application offers:

  • Driving status reporting of hours of service (HOS) and state mileage for IFTA fuel logging
  • Automatic on-board recording (AOBRD)
  • Text message protocols for sending and receiving messages between the driver and office
  • Destination protocols to receive and display new stops sent from the office
  • Estimated time of arrival (ETA) protocols
  • Multi-destination protocols that allow the office to send up to 12 destinations to the driver
  • Status protocols that show up-to-the-minute vehicle location

“Our new RoadMate RC9496T-LMB Android Fleet navigation device and application offer comprehensive fleet navigation solutions by providing the most extensive GPS features available as well as open protocols for easy integration, and real-time content delivered by our SmartGPS Eco cloud,” said Stig Pedersen, Magellan associate vice president, product management. “We think show goers will be very impressed by what they are going to see.”
