Touring Volvo/Mack's Powertrain Plant

Oct. 13, 2015

Nested in the rustic, rolling hills of Western Maryland and opened in 1961 originally to build just Mack powertrain products, the Volvo/Mack Hagerstown factory today spans 1.5 million sq. ft. of assembly space and builds Volvo and Mack-branded engines as well as transmissions. In July, Mack officially added production of its drive axles along with the machining of axle carrier housings as well. The plant underwent a two year, $30 million overhaul not only to add in drive axle production - encompassing 100,000 sq. ft. and requiring the addition of 100 extra jobs - but to improve its engine assembly process and centralize aftermarket core warehousing operations at the Hagerstown facility, too.
