Getting in shape for spring

We’ve all survived another winter, but it is very likely that at least some of your trucks came through it a little worse for wear. Now is a good time to get them in the shop for a spring maintenance checkup.

Here are some items that you’ll want to pay special attention to:

  • Cooling system: Inspect the cooling system for signs of leaks and test the coolant to ensure it will provide proper protection as outdoor temperatures start to rise.
  • Tires: Check inflation pressure to ensure tires are at their proper level. The wrong pressure increases tire heat and failures. In addition, improperly inflated tires mean your fuel efficiency will take a hit.
  • Wiper blades and washer fluid: Chances are you used a lot of windshield washer fluid this winter. Make sure the washer fluid is topped off and check the condition of the wiper blades. Worn blades need to be replaced so they are ready to handle spring rains.
  • Air conditioning system: Drivers expect the air conditioning system in their vehicles to be working as temperatures heat up. Make sure to inspect and test the A/C system including the cutout switches. And don’t forget to check the cab filter.
  • Fifth wheel: Spring is a good time to clean the 5th wheel to remove winter grime and road de-icing chemicals that may have built-up there.
  • Vehicle frame: We’ve all seen the incredible corrosion damage that is caused in relatively short order by today’s de-icing chemicals. Spring is the ideal time to rid the truck frame of residual chemicals, dirt and grime.
  • Electrical system: Test the condition of the battery to ensure it will make it through the warmer weather. Make sure to clean off the salt and dirt that may have accumulated during the winter.

This simple spring maintenance checklist will ensure your trucks are in tip-top shape for the warmer days ahead.
