The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Partnership has presented SmartWay Excellence Awards to 27 freight industry organizations that have made significant contributions to protecting the environment through participation in the partnership.

SmartWay is a voluntary partnership between the government and freight shippers, carriers, and logistics companies for improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impacts from freight transport.

This year's recipients have integrated a range of fuel-saving strategies into their freight and fleet operations, moving the nation toward cleaner air and greater energy security, said Robert J Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. Along with investing in trucks that qualify for the EPA SmartWay certification, signifying the vehicles “are the cleanest, most fuel-efficient available today, awardees also optimized delivery routes and provided more flexible shipping and receiving practices to reduce unnecessary idling.”
