Kohler Power Systems has two auxiliary power unit (APU) generator and climate control packages for heavy-duty trucks - the 3APU-HC and 7APU.
Said to be one of the highest powered APUs on the market today, the Kohler 7APU is a stand-alone, side-rail mounted design that doesn't require intrusion into the truck's other systems when being installed.
It provides 120 volts of AC and 45 amps of DC power, enough to run heating and cooling, charge the truck's battery, and run a block heater, as well as a variety of electronic equipment, such as TVs and microwaves, said a company official.
Powered by a liquid-cooled, 13.1-hp diesel engine, the 7APU weighs less than 540 pounds. It measures 26 inches wide, 29 inches high, and 24 inches deep (from frame rail).
The unit provides 14,000 BTU per hour of cooling and 2.5 kW of electric heating capacity. During typical operation, the unit burns approximately 0.3 gallons per hour, the official said.
A compact, integrally mounted in-cab controller features a digital keypad and display that shows run-time hours and up to six operational conditions, including engine temperature, oil pressure, and overspeed/underspeed.
Kohler's 3APU-HC is an economical, compact, and lightweight APU that supplies 55 amps of DC power to keep the truck's battery charged at all times. It comes equipped with separate, space-saving evaporator and condenser components, providing an air-conditioning capacity of 12,000 BTU per hour and 10,000 BTU per hour of heating.
The unit, 55 inches wide, 24 inches high, and 28 inches deep, weighs less than 240 pounds. It is powered by an air-cooled, 4.7-hp single-cylinder engine.
The 3APU-HC's separate evaporator features a four airflow cup design to distribute heating and cooling evenly throughout the cab. A wall mounted unit, it keeps under bunk storage space free for other uses.
The compact condenser is mounted outside on the back of the truck cab.
