Epes Transport deploys first CNG tractor

Dec. 26, 2013

Epes Transport, a Greensboro, NC-based carrier, has added its first compressed natural gas (CNG) tractor to its fleet following a 2 ½ year natural gas education project.

Initially, Epes will run CNG tractors only in North Carolina. In February, Epes will add liquid natural gas-fueled tractors to its operating lanes in Georgia and Florida.

“The natural gas-fueled tractor and tank technology is still evolving. It seems like we learn something new almost daily. Adding these tractors to our fleet is a critical step in our continued effort to reduce both the company’s carbon footprint and our dependence on foreign fuel,” said Paul Huffman, vice president of maintenance.

According to Huffman, the addition of natural gas tractors provides Epes’ personnel the opportunity to learn in a “live classroom” experience, “which should be a big help to future company projects.”
