The International LoneStar has been SmartWay-certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The SmartWay initiative aims to reduce 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions per year by 2012.

“As today’s diesel prices reach record highs, developing more fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible trucks is necessary to keep operating costs down for customers and to curtail each truck’s carbon footprint,” said Dee Kapur, president, Navistar Truck Group. “Navistar is committed to green transportation with advanced engineering and purposeful design. We look forward to working with the EPA to continue to improve the environmental performance of our commercial trucks, diesel engines and buses.”

SmartWay certification indicates a tractor model meets fuel-saving, low-emission equipment specifications for new Class 8 long-haul tractors.

According to the company, LoneStar features a more aerodynamic design for its bumper, hood, windshield, external air cleaners and chassis skirts, which improves fuel efficiency. It also features a MaxxPower APU to help cut idling, Navistar said.
