Con-way Multimodal has announced joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership and said it will pursue strategies to help the partnership’s goal of reducing between 33 and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2012. The partnership is a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the trucking industry to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution. There are more than 2,200 partners in the group.

“Participating in the SmartWay initiative supports our commitment to environmental sustainability — we know that’s important to our customers and it’s a priority for us,” said Tyler Ellison, president, Con-way Multimodal. “SmartWay also provides tools for consistently tracking progress toward specific goals, which will help us maintain focus on our efforts. We look forward to many benefits from our participation in this important program.”

In addition to cutting carbon dioxide, the partnership aims to eliminate up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of U.S. freight operations.

Under EPA’s program, SmartWay trucking and logistics companies commit to measuring and improving the efficiency of their freight operations using the EPA-developed F.L.E.E.T. (Fleet Logistics Energy and Environmental Tracking) Performance Model. Carriers and logistics companies must agree to improve their performance within three years and must also sign the SmartWay Transport Partnership Agreement. For information about the SmartWay Transport Partnership visit www.epa.gov/smartway.

Con-way Multimodal arranges third-party carrier services for over-the-road, intermodal, flatbed, heavy haul and specialized transportation for freight shipments.
