INDIANAPOLIS. A new severe duty plow truck from Freightliner offers optional under-hood access hatches for day-to-day maintenance checks when the plow attachment is still on the vehicle.
The 114 Severe Duty (SD) truck includes a 14.5 ft. elliptical dump body, 10 ft. front plow and belly scraper. Freightliner is showing the vehicle at this week’s National Truck Equipment Assn.’s Work Truck Show in Indianapolis.
“Snow plow operators are often operating in extreme weather conditions, and require a solution that won’t slow them down,” said T.J. Reed, director of product marketing. “We’ve included elements in this truck like extreme climate thermal insulation, inside/outside engine air intake with snow door and electronic control modules located inside the cab to protect them from the elements.”
The 114SD includes set-forward axle configuration and a “snow-plow friendly” hoop with a radiator-mounted stationary grille. This allows the hood to be opened when the vehicle is equipped with a variety of front-frame extension mounted snow plow attachments.
The contour of the hood prevents snow to build on the cowl, Freightliner said, and the aluminum cab is e-coated for protection against the elements.
The truck is equipped with a Detroit Diesel DD13 engine with BlueTec emissions technology producing 450 hp. at 1,650 lbs.-ft. of torque. Cummins ISL and ISC engines will become options in late 2011. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after-treatment system as well as a 70-gal. fuel tank, a 6-gal. DEF tank, and three battery mount are all packaged under the cab.
