Truckload carrier U.S. Xpress says it is equipping all 5,500 trucks in its fleet with a multi-mode wireless data system. The new system — Aether's MobileMax — automatically switches between land-based and satellite wireless networks to minimize communications costs and maximize coverage.
The fleet tested the system in 100 vehicles for several months before making the decision to switch wireless service providers, according to Max Fuller, co-chairman of U.S. Xpress.
The carrier says it plans to use several new MobileMax features, including a proximity alert application that automatically notifies dispatch when a vehicle enters or leaves a shipper or other specified location. U.S. Xpress also intends to use the system to remotely monitor vehicle fault codes and to automate state-line crossing reports.
