DriveCam turns up the light

DriveCam Video Systems, the California-based provider of knowledge-based systems designed to improve driving behavior, today announced the availability of the DriveCam “Illuminator,” a compact, infrared lighting device designed to brighten images captured by the DriveCam video event recorder.

According to the company, the Illuminator ensures that video and images of a vehicle’s interior captured in low-light conditions are clearly visible.

The DriveCam system was developed to help fleets identify and reduce risky driving behavior. It includes a dual-lens video camera to record sights and sounds inside and outside the vehicle. Using an omni-directional, infrared light source, the DriveCam Illuminator shines an invisible light within the vehicle’s interior. When the DriveCam unit is triggered by an unsafe driving event, the DriveCam Illuminator brightens the recorded images so they are clearer when later viewed and analyzed on a computer.

DriveCam recordings are designed to show drivers what they were doing wrong so that they can correct their behavior, thereby reducing collisions and lowering operating costs for commercial fleets, according to the company. When incidents such as collisions do occur, DriveCam recordings can also provide unbiased evidence to help determine fault and potentially expose fraudulent insurance claims.
