Highway information kiosks debut at Colorado truckstops

June 6, 2012

The Colorado Dept. of Transportation has debuted “COTrip Kiosks” — video screens that scroll highway and weather condition information 24 hours a day to keep long-haul truckers and other motorists abreast of highway conditions throughout the state.

The project, a partnership of the Colorado Motor Carriers Assn., the CDOT and Walmart, was launched officially last week at the Johnson’s Corner truckstop in Loveland, CO, according to a report in the Times Call.

The kiosks broadcast a rotating set of the live webcam images, plus scrolling lists of highway conditions, road closures and other alerts. CDOT, which represents more than 600 companies involved with trucking in Colorado, initiated the truck stop kiosk idea, using CDOT’s software and constantly updated data.

Walmart donated 20 42-in. TVs to get the program started, according to Greg Fulton, president of the Colorado Motor Carriers Assn.. So far, seven truckstops in Colorado have the kiosks. In addition to Johnson’s Corner, the first kiosks are going in at truckstops in Commerce City, Wiggins, Grand Junction, Limon, Watkins, Fountain, Walsenburg and Glenwood Springs.

Fulton anticipates more than 30 truck stops in the state will be participating within the next 12 months.
