Nash Finch logs a profitable first quarter

Nash Finch Co, a leading national food distributor, tallied earnings of $4.7 million for the first quarter of 2004, compared with $3.3 million for the first quarter of 2003.

Nash Finch Co, a leading national food distributor, tallied earnings of $4.7 million for the first quarter of 2004, compared with $3.3 million for the first quarter of 2003. Total sales for the 2004 quarter rose to $879.5 million versus $856.7 million in the prior-year period.

Food distribution segment sales for the first quarter of 2004 improved to $431.1 million compared with $388.4 million a year ago, an 11.0% increase. Food distribution segment operating profits climbed to $14.5 million versus $11.2 million in the first quarter of 2003.

Military segment sales totaled $253.7 million, a 2.8% increase over $246.8 million for 2003's first quarter. Segment operating profits were $8.2 million; in 2003, they were $6.7 million.
