PeopleNet has introduced a trailer tracking offering that requires no additional trailer hardware.

Rick Ochsendorf, PeopleNet executive vice-president of operations, said, “Our Tethered Trailer Tracking solution uses the existing Power Line Communication (PLC) cable for exchanging data between the trailer’s ABS (antilock brake system) and the PeopleNet system through the Multi-Bus Adapter with a PLC chip. This configuration provides the most cost-effective trailer tracking solution for reducing the cost of lost trailers, eliminating manual yard checks, managing trailer detention, and improving utilization information for more efficient maintenance. In addition to being easy to use, there also is significant saving in time-consuming installation and labor cost. Since a typical fleet has around a 2:1 trailer-to-tractor ratio, that can be tremendous.”

Once connected to the tractor, the trailer’s unique serial number is sent to the PeopleNet system, which in turn creates location-based hook-and-drop events for the trailer. Event information is stored, including date/time, location, vehicle and trailer odometer reading. Odometer readings, in particular, provide a history that enables accurate usage-based maintenance.

In other news, PeopleNet has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and entered into a collaborative business relationship with Drivewyze Inc, creators of the Drivewyze PreClear weigh station bypass service. Under terms of the MOU, Drivewyze and PeopleNet will explore ways to join forces to deliver their complementary products and services to PeopleNet’s customer base.

Drivewyze is a new way for commercial vehicles to bypass fixed weigh stations and mobile inspection sites using select Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), tablets, and smartphones, offering transponder-like capabilites and eliminating the need for dedicated transponders in each truck. Since its launch in September 2012, the Drivewyze network has expanded to provide bypass services at 218 sites in 15 states.

Hands-free and compliant with federal and state distracted-driving regulations, the Drivewyze PreClear service provides simple visual and audible instructions for drivers to either bypass weigh stations and inspection sites, or to safely pull-in. Drivewyze assures privacy and data protection and connects to network service via a single account regardless of where a driver travels.
