Republic Services, a commercial, industrial and municipal waste hauler operating in 40 states, is field testing four Mack Trucks diesel SCR-equipped, pre-production, garbage truck. The company is also testing a hybrid truck.

The SCR trucks are in operation in Denver, Eden Prairie, MN, Lakeland, FL, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

“Republic has been field testing the Mack SCR prototype garbage collection chassis,” said Ron Cole, regional fleet sales manager for Mack Trucks. “This quickens the pace of our development of technologies that can be implemented immediately to protect our environment. Republic and Mack will continue to partner in the development of hybrid diesel-electric prototypes as both our companies explore opportunities to adopt hybrid at the heavy duty level for the collection of wastes and recyclables.”

“Using SCR technology now and hybrid technology later is a two-pronged approach,” said Roy Svehla, senior manager of fleet maintenance for Republic. “Working with Mack, we are striving to develop equipment that serves our business from cost, service and maintenance perspectives. Chassis life cycles, operating, procurement and maintenance costs, driver ergonomics, safety, environmental compliance and dealer support are all factored into the equation when we make our purchasing decisions.”

The hybrid truck, the first American-built hybrid garbage truck, according to Mack, uses diesel-electric technology that can boost fuel economy by 20% while cutting greenhouse emissions. The engine also charges an onboard energy storage system that powers an electric motor and energy is also captured during braking using regenerative braking.
