Refuse hauler Waste Management (WM) is planning to convert 55 trucks in its Columbus, OH, waste and recycling collection fleet to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The company already operates 1,000 CNG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles across North America.
WM added that it also plans to install a new CNG fueling facility at its Canal Winchester location in Columbus to refuel these 55 CNG-powered trucks, using a “slow-fill” refueling procedure to achieve greater engine efficiency.
The company pointed out it currently has natural gas fueling stations at 17 of its facilities throughout North America with more under development.
Each of these new trucks carries approximately 50 gals. of CNG, WM added, which allows them to run 10 to 12 hours and complete a typical day’s waste or recycling collection route. The company also noted the CNG-powered engines also run quieter than traditional diesel engines, reducing noise during collection operations on community streets.
Altogether, WM expects 80% of its new collection vehicle purchases this year to be natural gas powered trucks.
