Biodiesel and warranties

The following covers current manufacturer warranty information. It should be noted that while the manufacturers warranty their components when using certified biodiesel fuels, most warranties do not cover damage caused as a direct result of non-certified biodiesel. Also, the recent announcement of the ASTM specs for B6 to B20 will probably lead all engine makers to extend warranty coverage up to B20

The following covers current manufacturer warranty information. It should be noted that while the manufacturers warranty their components when using certified biodiesel fuels, most warranties do not cover damage caused as a direct result of non-certified biodiesel. Also, the recent announcement of the ASTM specs for B6 to B20 will probably lead all engine makers to extend warranty coverage up to B20 in the near future.

  • Caterpillar: In general, the company does not void warranties for use of biodiesel. Any damage to the engine or engine components as a result of an improper fuel/blend, though, will void the warranty. The blend must meet ASTM D6751 standards and come from an accredited BQ-9000 producer. Each Caterpillar engine has different standards up to B30 usage in some applications. The OEM recommends consulting with your local supplier for further details.

  • Cummins: Warranties defects in all material or factory workmanship as long as a biodiesel blend meeting all specifications outlined in the Fuels Service Bulletin (3379001-11) are met.

  • Detroit Diesel: Warranties only B5 biodiesel meeting ASTM D6751 standards from an accredited BQ-9000 producer.

  • Dodge/Chrysler: The use of B5 biodiesel is covered by warranty in the Dodge Sprinter Van and the 2008 Dodge Ram 2500/3500. B20 is covered in all 2007 Dodge Ram government, military and commercial fleets.

  • Ford: Any recent-model Ford diesel engine is covered up to B5 biodiesel.

  • GM: Warranties use of B5 biodiesel for all diesel vehicles and B20 biodiesel on certain 2008 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra fleet vehicles.

  • International: Warranties the use of B5 in all engines. International does not deny warranty coverage solely on the use of higher blends, but will deny coverage if component failure is attributable to the use of higher blends.

  • Isuzu: Warranties use of B5 biodiesel on all diesel engines.

  • Mack: Warranties B5 biodiesel. The warranty is expected to include all biodiesel up to B20 after ASTM specification receives final approval.

  • Navistar: Warranties all biodiesel blends up to B5 meeting ASTM D6751 and ASTM D975 specifications. Use of B6 to B20 blends is at the discretion of the customer and does not automatically void an engine warranty; however, if engine component failure can be directly attributed to the use of a B6 to B20 blend not provided by a BQ-9000 certified fuel supplier, not meeting the EMA B20 Test Fuel Specification or not used per recommendations, Navistar may deny warranty coverage.

  • Paccar: Certifies medium-duty engines up to B20 biodiesel meeting ASTM D6751 specs.

  • Volvo: Warranties only B5 biodiesel.
