Japanese light vehicle maker Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., is rolling out a six-year environmental plan that focuses on reducing the global company’s carbon footprint, shifting to renewable energy, and increasing the diversity of resources used by the OEM.

Dubbed the Nissan Green Program 2016 (NGP 2016) – the third such environmental “mid-term” plan the company has authored – it aims to deliver the following by the end of fiscal year 2016:

  • Increase sales of zero-emission vehicles to achieve cumulative sales of 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles across the Renault-Nissan Alliance
  • Increase fuel efficiency by posting a 35% fuel economy improvement compared with 2005 on a corporate average for all Nissan vehicles sold in Japan, China, Europe and the U.S.
  • Improve corporate carbon footprint by a 20% reduction per vehicle of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission of corporate activities compared with 2005
  • Boost closed-loop recycling to raise the usage rate of recycled materials to 25%

“More consumers are demanding products in line with their values, including cars and trucks with a lower carbon footprint,” explained Carlos Ghosn, Nissan president & CEO, in a statement. “At the same time, we are using technology to make our factories greener and more efficient.”

“We want to be part of the solution toward a sustainable society-- for the sake of the planet and as a significant competitive advantage and a strategic differentiator in the global manufacturing sector,” Ghosn added.
