American Honda Motor Co. has added a Peterbilt Model 386 hybrid diesel-electric truck to its Alpharetta, GA parts-center fleet. The company uses Class 8 trucks to transport service parts between its parts centers and dealerships, with the fleet traveling about 300,000 miles per day, Honda said.

According to the company, the SmartWay-certified hybrid is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 45 tons per year. Honda said it will test the vehicle over the next year along two routes-- a hilly route in Tennessee and a relatively flat one in Georgia—to test its fuel economy under various driving conditions compared to a diesel truck.

“We’re excited to add this environmentally advanced truck to our fleet,” said Jim Roach, senior vp of parts and service for American Honda. “With our truck fleet driving hundreds of thousands of miles per day, we feel this is a great opportunity for Honda to further reduce its carbon footprint.”

The company also noted it will soon add a Peterbilt Class 7 medium-duty hybrid truck to its parts centers in Alpharetta and Irving, TX.
