Full specifications for Class 6 T270 and Class 7 T370 diesel-electric hybrid trucks and tractors are available in a new brochure from Kenworth Truck Co. The truck models are intended for P&D, utility and service applications, and the tractors for local haul applications, including beverage, general freight and grocery distribution.

The 6-page brochure includes hybrid specifications for the powertrain, starting and charging, transmission, frame, axle, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, fuel tanks, battery boxes, bumpers, cab, hood, interior, and special equipment and options.

The Kenworth hybrids use an integral transmission-mounted motor/generator linked to a frame-mounted 340-volt, lithium-ion battery pack to generate and store electricity generated through regenerative braking and used to assist the diesel engine on acceleration. The diesel used in the hybrid models is a Paccar PX-6 engine and Eaton supplies the diesel-electric hybrid drive system.

Fleets buying one of the new KWs may qualify for a maximum federal tax credit of $6,000 for Class 6 models and $12,000 for Class 7s, according to the OEM. They can also apply for grant money available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act if they permanently remove an equal number of existing diesel-fueled trucks from the marketplace.
