Horizon begins green initiative

Horizon Lines, Inc. has launched Horizon Green, an initiative aimed at better understanding and measuring freight transportation’s impact on the environment and developing programs that promote increased environmental sensitivity, the company said.

According to Horizon, the green initiative addresses four areas—protecting the marine environment, reducing emissions, promoting sustainability and launching a carbon offset program.

The carbon offset program, Aero Green, was developed by Aero Logistics, the company’s custom delivery and special handling division. It offers a carbon-neutral option for retailers and manufacturers and funds programs such as forestation and alternative energy projects, Horizon said.
