Advanced powertrain engineering firm Roush Performance Products has developed a Ford F-150 pickup powered by liquid propane injection (LPI).

Roush said its dedicated F-150 LPI system is designed and manufactured to operate solely on propane while providing the same horsepower, torque and drivability of an F-150 equipped with a gasoline 5.4-liter, 3-valve Triton V8 engine.

“This is an alternative fuel vehicle that has an established refueling infrastructure to support it,” said Tom Arnold, director, alternative fuel products for Roush. “This vehicle will have a positive impact on reducing emissions and our dependency on foreign oil.”

The firm said the 2008 model year truck can be ordered, delivered and serviced through a nationwide network of select Ford dealers. It is offered in Regular Cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew styles with XL, XLT, STX and FX4 trim and in three different bed lengths.

According to the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), propane's emissions contain 62.7 kg CO2/million Btu when fuel is burned at a 99% combustion rate, a lower carbon content than gasoline, diesel, heavy fuel oil or ethanol. The exhaust from a propane-fueled engine contains virtually no toxic compounds and has fewer contaminants and pollutants, the company said.
