Seattle Business magazine has recognized Kenworth Truck Co. with a Green Washington award for its environmental efforts with hybrid trucks and at its Renton, WA, plant.

The magazine’s Second Annual Green Washington awards recognize companies that have “demonstrated leadership, innovation and commitment to sustaining the environment through initiatives and actions that contribute to environmental sustainability in Washington State.”

“Kenworth is pleased to receive the Green Washington manufacturing award in recognition of our extensive environmental efforts,” said Bill Kozek, Kenworth gm & and Paccar vp. “Kenworth continues to lead the trucking industry by providing practical technologies that help customers enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions. We now have over 500 hybrid and LNG trucks operating in the marketplace.”

The Renton facility has been honored before for its environmental efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. It is ISO 140001:2004 certified for effective environmental management systems and won a 2009 Best Workplace for Recycling and Waste Reduction award from the King County’s Solid Waste Division.

Coca-Cola Enterprises operates 305 Kenworth T370 hybrids and the New York City truck fleet recently purchased a T370 hybrid. Kenworth’s goals for its hybrids “is to enhance fuel economy by up to 30% in pickup and delivery applications and up to 50% in utility and service operations,” the company said.

Model T800 liquefied natural gas tractors, which Kenworth said cuts nitrogen oxide emissions 33% and greenhouse gas emissions 20%, are in use in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
