CleanFuel, FCCC introduce propane truck platform

March 7, 2012

CleanFuel USA, a supplier of propane autogas infrastructure and engine systems, along with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. introduced what is being called the only propane autogas-fueled option for the medium-duty commercial truck market.

The new Freightliner S2G chassis is equipped with CleanFuel’s liquid propane-injected engine technology and was on display this week at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis.

“The S2G was developed in response to significant industry interest for an LPG solution without retrofitting or aftermarket additions,” said FCCC president Bob Harbin. “In offering the only original equipment manufacturer LPG solution for medium-duty applications, we believe the S2G will meet our customers’ needs. The S2G also perfectly fits into FCCC’s heritage as a custom chassis manufacturer with a successful history in alternative fuel powertrains.”

The S2G’s 8L, 325-hp. engine is built on FCCC’s popular S2 chassis suitable for pickup and delivery, school transportation and municipal applications. Like its diesel counterpart, the front-engine S2G utilizes the Freightliner M2 cab, which features a sloped, forward-tilting hood for superior visibility and easy engine access. It has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 33,000 lbs. and comes equipped with an Allison 2300 automatic transmission with PTO provision.

As the lowest greenhouse gas emitting fuel, propane autogas averages 40 to 50% fewer emissions than gasoline/diesel per gallon. There are more than 52,000 autogas refueling stations and 17 million propane-powered vehicles worldwide, according to CleanFuel USA president Tucker Perkins.

“CleanFuel continues to demonstrate its engine technology leadership in the fleet market by rolling out new propane autogas fleet vehicle options, such as the Freightliner S2G,” Perkins said. “Fleet managers are experiencing significant economic and environmental benefits from using propane autogas-powered vehicles, without sacrificing any compromise of payload, power or performance.”
