Impco issues recall for Express, Savana vans with CNG fuel systems

June 5, 2013

Impco Automotive has issued a recall for its compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems installed as original equipment in certain 2011-2013 model year Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans.

Impro has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of a safety defect in the system, resulting in the recall.

According to the company, shut-off solenoids manufactured by an outside vendor and located in the underbody fuel system are susceptible to corrosion, which can lead to a short circuit and overheating, increasing the risk of a fire.

GM and IMPCO are conducting a recall to notify dealers and owners of this condition and to arrange the necessary repairs. Repairs will be performed at no cost to owners. This recall affects approximately 1,800 vehicles.

A copy of Iimpco’s safety defect notice can be accessed at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchVehicles.

A joint Impco-General Motors quality investigation was prompted by an initial fleet report that an underbody solenoid overheated and melted, Impco said. Engineering personnel performed field surveys and component testing to determine the root cause. No accidents or injuries have been reported.
