Fuel prices fall across most of the U.S. as summer winds down

While national diesel prices are about even to this time last year, gasoline pump prices are down nearly 30 cents compared to 52 weeks ago. Here is how fuel prices stack up across the U.S.

The national average on-highway diesel price dropped nearly a nickel to $3.754 per gallon, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for the week ending August 12. The price is a half cent more than it was 52 weeks ago. 

Regular gasoline pump prices fell about two cents this week, down to $3.118 per gallon, according to the federal tracking agency. That price is 29.6 cents less than it was a year ago.

What are current U.S. diesel prices by region?

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S., per EIA's latest update:

  • East Coast: The most significant weekly diesel price decrease was at pumps along the East Coast, which fell five cents to a $3.757 per gallon average. 
  • West Coast: Diesel prices on the West Coast dropped 4.8 cents per gallon to $4.492. The pump prices in the West Coast states, excluding California, were down to $4.148 per gallon this week. The Golden State, still home to the most expensive average fuel prices, stood at $4.899 per gallon this week—down 5.7 cents from last week.
  • Gulf Coast: Prices in Gulf Coast states were down 4.5 cents to $3.397 per gallon.
  • Midwest: Diesel prices also fell 4.5 cents to $3.747 per gallon in the Midwest.
  • Rocky Mountain: Pump prices dropped just 1.7 cents per gallon on average in Rocky Mountain states, where diesel stands at $3.776 this week. 

According to AAA Motor Club, which also tracks national motor fuel trends, the national diesel price averaged $3.716 per gallon on August 12, which is 2.2 cents less than AAA figures from a week ago.

What are current U.S. gasoline pump prices by region?

National average regular gasoline prices sit at $3.140 per gallon on August 12, according to AAA. That is 2.3 cents less than the motor club average a week ago. According to the federal EIA tracker, regular gas was $3.118 on August 11, down 2.2 cents from the previous period. 

Here are this week’s regular gasoline price highlights from each U.S. region, according to EIA:

  • Gulf Coast: Gasoline prices dropped 5.1 cents to $2.680 in Gulf Coast states this week. That was the most significant week-over-week drop across the U.S.
  • Midwest: Pump prices were down 4.6 cents in Midwest states to $2.997 per gallon. 
  • East Coast: Down by 2.2 cents this week, East Coast states averaged 3.005 per gallon.
  • West Coast: Prices ticked up 0.9 cents per gallon in the West Coast states to $4.032. Excluding California (where pump prices average $4.266), the West Coast averages $3.777 per gallon.
  • Rocky Mountain: After a 3.2-cent spike this week, the Rocky Mountain states average $3.159 per gallon.

In a recent press release, AAA said, “Crude oil prices are hanging in the mid $60s per barrel, keeping pump prices steady. Supply remains abundant, as OPEC+, a group of oil-producing countries, recently announced it will be boosting production again next month, following several other increases this year.”
