• Charge management: If London double-deckers can do it, can U.S. fleets?

If London’s fleet of iconic double-decker buses can optimize charging its fleet of 1,000 electric buses at just 20 depots, shouldn’t localized truck and work van fleets have the same success?

While many U.S. fleets have worked to build their EV fleets a few at a time, there are few who’ve implemented wide-scale adoption. Much of this is likely due to the nature of U.S. travel: It is far and wide.

Unlike in London and most of Europe, operating a fleet in the U.S. can sometimes mean multiple miles over long distances. But for those fleets with localized operations, perhaps something could be learned from London’s double-deckers.

Go-Ahead Group, an international public transport company that operates electric fleets of London’s famous sightseeing vehicles, partnered with BetterFleet, an EV charging management platform, to simplify bus charging. BetterFleet employs artificial intelligence to create a seamless and comprehensive solution, ensuring Go-Ahead Group always has buses ready to roll.

Gathering data from multiple sources, such as asset monitoring, dispatch, GPS monitoring, load management, microgrid integration, and more, BetterFleet allows visibility into charging systems, maximizing usage, and minimizing downtime. It also integrates these charging systems into its own platform in order to ensure fleet leaders can view important metrics all on a single pane of glass. This helps fleets reduce costs and improve utilization.

“By using BetterFleet, we have live data to track and manage our zero-emission fleet through its in-depot charge status and on-road state of charge, as well as manage our energy consumption more effectively and minimize our impact on the grid,” Matt Carney, CEO of Go-Ahead Bus, said in a press release.

BetterFleet also provides fleet planning insights supported by live charging data. This “provides a complete electrification ecosystem, allowing fleets to plan smarter, charge smarter, and operate more efficiently,” the company said.

“We’re thrilled to see our technology making an immediate impact on Go-Ahead Group’s operations,” BetterFleet CEO Daniel Hilson said in the release. “Our platform’s real-time monitoring, automated scheduling, and AI-driven predictive analytics enable them to manage charging more efficiently, helping reduce costs and ensure that electric buses are ready to meet service.”
