Dragonfly Energy secures patent for Wakespeed Charge Control, boosting trailer battery integration
Dragonfly Energy recently secured U.S. Patent No. 12,403,782 for its Wakespeed Charge Control technology, which enables power transfer from a towing vehicle to a trailer to charge onboard batteries. The technology scales vehicle-to-trailer charging to kilowatt levels at higher voltages while incorporating safety features that prevent electrical arcs, protect equipment, and ensure reliable operation.
“We believe this patent reinforces our competitive position by protecting technology that enables safe, efficient integration of batteries, alternators, and charging systems,” Dr. Denis Phares, CEO of Dragonfly Energy, said. “It highlights how we are expanding from batteries into full power system solutions across multiple industries.”
The patent enhances Dragonfly Energy’s system-level integration expertise, and the company continues to expand its intellectual property portfolio with approximately 100 patents filed, pending, or granted. Learn more…
CARB reports continued rise in zero-emission truck sales for fourth consecutive year
California saw record sales of 30,026 zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in 2024, accounting for nearly 23% of all new Class 2b–8 vehicle sales and exceeding statewide requirements. The data, reported to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), includes battery-electric and fuel cell vehicles such as delivery vans, school buses, big rigs, and pickup trucks.
“This continued growth in zero-emission truck sales shows that manufacturers are stepping up to meet California’s clean air goals and that the transition to cleaner fleets is accelerating,” CARB Chair Liane Randolph, said. “With strong sales, a growing credit surplus, and rapid innovation, the industry is proving that zero-emission technology is ready for wider deployment.”
California’s Clean Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) has supported this growth, providing nearly $200 million in funding and helping deploy more than 10,500 clean vehicles across 2,000 fleets over 15 years. The program continues to expand with over 5,000 vehicles in production and $30 million allocated for the Innovative Small e-Fleet Pilot Project, as well as incentives for eligible drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
