As the holidays approach, diesel and gas prices continue to drop. The national average on-highway diesel price dropped 6 cents to $3.544, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on December 23. Gas prices dropped 5 cents to $2.841. 

What are the current diesel prices across the U.S?

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • West Coast: The largest diesel price drop this week was 9 cents to $4.205. Excluding California, diesel prices fell 11 cents to $3.766.
  • Midwest: Diesel prices in the Midwest fell 8 cents to $3.483.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, diesel prices dropped 8 cents to $3.304.
  • Gulf Coast: Diesel prices fell 5 cents to $3.214.
  • East Coast: Diesel prices fell 3 cents to $3.674.

According to AAA Motor Club (AAA), the current national diesel price average is $3.590. This is 5 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 10 cents higher than this time last year.

What are the current gasoline prices across the U.S.?

The current national average on-highway gasoline price is $2.841, according to EIA, 5 cents lower than last week’s average. 

Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Midwest: The biggest drop in gasoline prices this week occurred in the Midwest for 9 cents to $2.605.
  • West Coast: Along the West Coast, gas prices dropped 8 cents to $3.768. Without including California, gas prices dropped 8 cents to $3.422.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, gas prices dropped 6 cents to $2.492. 
  • Gulf Coast: Along the Gulf Coast, gas prices dropped 5 cents to $2.443.
  • East Coast: Along the East Coast, gas prices dropped 2 cents to $2.820.

According to AAA, the current national gasoline price average is $2.858. This is 2 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 18 cents lower than this time last year.

In a recent press release, AAA said, “This is the cheapest December at the pump since the end of 2020. Crude oil prices remain low, and despite an increase in gasoline demand over the holidays, supply is strong. Overall, 2025 has been a stable year for the national average with few fluctuations and no sharp spikes.”
