Diesel and gas prices have spiked for the first time in 2026. The national average on-highway diesel price jumped 7 cents to $3.530, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on January 21. Gas prices rose 3 cents to $2.806.

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Gulf Coast: The biggest increase in diesel prices this week occurred along the Gulf Coast, rising 9 cents to $3.248.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, diesel prices rose 8 cents to $3.445.
  • West Coast: Along the West Coast, diesel prices rose 8 cents to $4.189. Without including California, diesel prices rose 11 cents to $3.782.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, diesel prices rose 6 cents to $3.246.
  • East Coast: Along the East Coast, diesel prices rose 4 cents to $3.653.

According to AAA Motor Club (AAA), the current national diesel price average is $3.531. This is 0.1 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 12 cents lower than this time last year.

What are the current gasoline prices across the U.S.?

The current national average on-highway gasoline price is $2.806, according to EIA, 3 cents higher than last week’s average. 

Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Rocky Mountain: The biggest increase in gasoline prices this week was in the Rockies, rising 7 cents to $2.494.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, gas prices rose 4 cents to $2.648.
  • East Coast: Along the East Coast, gas prices rose 2 cents to $2.763.
  • Gulf Coast: Along the Gulf Coast, gas prices rose 2 cents to $2.397.
  • West Coast: Along the West Coast, gas prices rose 1 cent to $3.657. Without including California, gas prices rose 2 cents to $3.295.

According to AAA, the current national gasoline price average is $2.833. This is 3 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 29 cents lower than this time last year.

In a recent press release, AAA said: “Drivers are still paying less than they were last year when the national average was $3.08. Pump prices are typically low in January, thanks to a dip in gas demand and cheaper winter blend gasoline. Crude oil prices remain low as markets keep an eye on tensions in Iran, which is a member of OPEC and one of the world’s top oil producers. Any disruption to Iran’s oil infrastructure could have a ripple effect on gas prices here at home.”
