ACT: Lull in used Class 8 sales continues

Pricing and volumes stayed relatively flat in September, firm says.

Data compiled by ACT Research indicates used Class 8 truck sales in the U.S. remain stuck in what the firm dubbed a protracted “summertime lull,” with volumes and pricing relatively flat in September.

ACT said used Class 8 sales volumes were up 8% in September month-over-month, but were only up 1% on a year-over-year comparison.

The average age of U.S. Class 8 used trucks climbed to 93 months, while average prices slipped 4% month-over-month and 8% year-over-year.

“According to our dealer conversations, used truck sales continue to be strong overall, but some dealers have reported a slowdown in used truck sales, with the summertime lull hanging on a little longer than usual,” noted Steve Tam, ACT’s VP-commercial vehicle sector, in a statement.
