Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) is recalling its VHD, VNL and VNM trucks for model years 2003-2008, as well as the VT units for model years 2005, 2007 and 2008, because of problems with the lighting system.

In a post on its web site, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says: “On certain heavy duty trucks, the circuit protection system (i.e. automatic breakers) used to protect the vehicle lighting system may not provide enough protection. If a short circuit occurs and is left untreated, components and wiring may be subject to overheating, which could possibly result in a vehicle fire.”

During the recall, which is expected to begin about Feb. 25, 2008, according to NHTSA, dealers will replace the circuit breakers with fuses.

The manufacturer's report referred to on the NHTSA site, dated Dec. 7, 2007, puts the potential number of units affected in the U.S. at close to 105,000. It has been reported that a far smaller number will be affected in Canada and Mexico.
